HULU is a US-based video-on-demand streaming platform, established in October 2007 to screen recent episodes of current network series. A subscription service selling older programming was launched in November 2010 under the name Hulu Plus (aka hulu+). This was shortened to just hulu in April 2015.
DOCTOR WHO ON HULU PLUS / HULU
In early 2012, Hulu Plus made a deal with the BBC to show Doctor Who (new series only) via its service in Japan.
By 2013, Hulu Plus had also acquired the rights to stream a large back-catalogue of Classic episodes of Doctor Who in the USA. Although it's a subscription-based pay service, Hulu also played commercials, with at least three breaks per half hour.
Commencing from 18 September 2013, a significant package of Doctor Who serials was made available online to US subscribers. According to most online sources, there were 98 serials in the package; one source gave the episode count as being "over 400", another source had a very specific figure of 413 episodes (although it's not clear if the 45 minute episodes were being counted as singles or doubles).
We did find a list online HERE but there were only 97 titles given! The episode tally of that list comes to 411 if we count the 45 minute segments as two half-hours, so it still doesn't quite tally.
98 stories (only 97 listed below), equivalent of no less than 411 half hour episodes:
Unlike the DVD and all previous syndication screenings, The Chase was not edited, with the appearance of the Beatles in part one intact.
The package included The Enemy of the World and The Web of Fear (the missing third episode was shown as a tele-snap reconstruction), the first time both stories had been included in a group package with other classic serials since being recovered in 2013.
At the end of January 2016, both Hulu Plus and Netflix lost the rights to stream Doctor Who, and from 27 March 2016 until the launch of Britbox in early 2017, the series was only available in the US on Amazon Prime…
Thanks to John Geoffrion for the list of 97 titles
