When Doctor Who screened in Italy in 1980, the population was 57 million, and licensed TV sets numbered 13.6 million (per WRTH, 1984).

There are MANY television stations: Radiotelevisione Italia (RAI), a government-owned commercial broadcaster.
Colour transmissions began in 1977 using the PAL colour broadcast system.
